Meme = Scientific?

I've been working on my Profile and have been looking through different meme's to get some ideas. After doing a Google search, my beloved Wikipedia threw me a curve ball. Ok, so maybe I'm a bit daft but meme's didn't strike me as something that originated in science. I figured they were just a blogging....."thing". Go ahead, shake your head and wriggle your index finger at me, I can take it.
